Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is transmitted to the outside provider that operates the tool. That provider processes the request and supplies its results. We do not retain or record those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email or other direct message may be kept long enough for our team to respond and maintain the related correspondence. We do not disclose the message outside the organization unless the law requires disclosure.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers automatically receive basic technical information when a visitor loads a page:
- Page-view dates and times
- Browser name and version
- Device category and operating system
- Internet Protocol address
- Pages viewed and the time spent on them
- The referring website, when one is supplied
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files saved on a device. We use them with analytics services to understand traffic in aggregate, including popular pages and common exit points. A browser can block cookies, though some website functions may then work differently.
What We Do With This Data
- Diagnosing faults and repairing technical problems
- Maintaining the website and improving load performance
- Sending a submitted query to the search partner that operates the tool
- Understanding which reference pages visitors use most often
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
We do not keep, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. The site explains how to find records held by the Appomattox County Sheriff's Office, local courts, the Virginia Department of State Police, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor data is not assembled into a report about another person, and we are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes shown on some pages. A partner's own privacy policy governs information entered into its tool. We do not direct that company's retention, use, or sharing decisions, so review its policy before submitting a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Virginia agencies, Appomattox County offices, courts, legal resources, or outside search providers. Once a visitor follows an external link, the destination's privacy terms apply. Review them before providing personal information.
Some advertising providers may use activity across multiple websites to select ads. That tracking is performed on the provider's systems.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold by us. It may be disclosed to:
- Analytics providers that measure use and performance
- Advertising networks that supply ads
- Search partners that process a query submitted to their tool
- A court or government authority acting under a valid legal demand
How We Protect Your Data
We use customary safeguards for the information under our control. No internet service can guarantee complete security, however, and we cannot promise that unauthorized access will never occur.
Users Under 18
This website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone younger than 18. If such information is identified, we will remove it.
Your Data Rights
Depending on residency and applicable exemptions, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, Virginia Code § 59.1-575 et seq., may provide rights concerning personal data. Virginia FOIA, § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs access to qualifying government records, not data kept by this private site. Criminal-history dissemination by the Virginia Department of State Police is separately limited by Virginia Code § 19.2-389. A visitor may ask to:
- Receive a copy of personal information held about the visitor
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Delete qualifying personal information
- Opt out of certain covered processing activities
